A Day Trip

We were a bit slow getting started yesterday and out of the house.  We had mapped out a route we wanted to go south to Penzance (The Pirates of), St. Michael's Mount which is an island off the coast near Penzance which is only accessible by foot when the tide is out, The Merry Maidens which is another stone circle, the Minack Theater which is built in stone on the water in the side of a cliff and Mousehole ,  Porthcurno and Land's End.

It took us twice the time it would normally take to drive there due to the holiday traffic.  Nothing here is very far away but it takes so much longer because of the roads.  We had to stop for petrol on the way and there was a McDonald's there.  We couldn't believe how crowded the place was.  We have seen more of them in Cornwall than anywhere else we have been.  Also the first Starbucks was in that same area.  We got to St. Michael's and it was amazing to see.  Basically, the church and a house are on top of the mount and below the family built a little town for the people that worked for them.  I can't imagine working there and having to climb that hill/mountain everyday to get to work.  We walked the walk out there but didn't go up the mountain...Kay and I are both disabled and thought that would be pushing it.

We saw this seagull with one foot missing

On the street outside the hotel where we had lunch

We had lunch at a beautiful hotel overlooking the Mount and it was delicious then we walked around the town a bit and headed back to the car and on to Penzance.  We didn't see any pirates, at least that we were aware of so we headed on to the Mousehole which was a place Kay wanted to see.  Again it was a miraculous test of her driving skills of which she passed with flying colors.  There was absolutely nowhere to park so we pulled over and took a few photos and moved on to find the Maidens.

Kay had read about the "Merry Maidens" and put that on our list to see.  Well Rick Steve's and George our GPS put us on an adventure down a one lane narrow road....again.  We were in very deep woods then up a steep hill until we reached the sea...very pretty but not in the plan.  We found a place to pull over and reread the directions and realized we turned too soon.  We retraced our path and finally found those maidens in the middle of a cow pasture on a hill.  I don't understand the relationship these people had with stone circles.  Although this one is not as elaborate as Stonehenge, it is still a circle of stones that would have been quite difficult to move.  We gave up on trying to figure out their reasoning and moved on to our next stop.

Our next stop was to be the Minack Theater in Porhtcurno.  Again we were on single lane roads having to pull over where there was a significant drop off on the side but finally we find the theater and pull into the parking lot.  We get out and head toward the box office and the lady says we are too late.  Really?  After all this, they close at 5PM and we didn't get there until 5:45 and they were clearing out the sightseers and getting ready to open up for a concert.  Well, that didn't work out well.  So disappointed, we head off to our final destination of the day..Land's End.  Susan Hill and her husband said it wasn't worth seeing but we weren't far and thought we would just go.

It was a long drive back to Port Isaac and we were cold and tired.  There is a new pizza place at the top of the village so we decided to order a pizza and then run to the co-op and pick up the few things we needed.  We went back and picked up the pizza and came home to eat.  The pizza was not great but we were hungry and ate it all anyway.  It was almost 10 by the time we finished and then I started on the blog.  It is constantly giving us errors and reformatting, then taking forever to upload photos so I gave up and went to bed and finished this morning.  We both are beginning to think it's Blogger but the internet is really slow here.

Well, here we are at the end of week 3 and even after taking a header I say well done us and proper job!
